4/24/2023 0 Comments Dsny garbage truck![]() I have politely asked the drivers of the trucks not to do this and they have ignored me. They are not permitted to block a lane of traffic let alone two lanes, when it is avoidable and they are never to back in with the front of the truck sticking out into oncoming traffic as seen in these photos. ![]() I have spoken to the Department of Sanitation. They also recklessly drive their trucks into oncoming traffic to get to the next pick-up location quickly. School buses filled with children and city buses must dodge cars, taxis, pedestrians (jaywalking) and other oncoming vehicles because these workers are too indolent to pull adjacent to the curb or a parked vehicle and walk a whole extra eight to ten feet to load their truck or trucks. ![]() Oncoming traffic has to go over the double yellow line to get around these trucks. You Can Read Those Truck Numbers Pretty Clearly I will let these photos taken over the course of a year basically describe the situation. On a busy crosstown block in Manhattan where there is two-way traffic a school crossing zone ( the school is one block away!) a major bus route and lots of vehicles trying to navigate the streets in rush hour, these workers have consistently demonstrated their disdain for traffic laws and public safety. Now when you can do something the easy way or the hard way, almost always you should choose the easy way, right? I’m talking about something that is egregious. I’m not talking about just backing up traffic on narrow streets by not fully pulling over and instead parking their trucks diagonally when they load garbage. That is why I am going to call out this group of “New York’s Laziest” as there is a subset of sanitation workers who demonstrate their slothful ways with a complete disregard for traffic laws and public safety on a daily basis. The trucks are expected to hit the road by October, and DSNY hopes to represent artists from every borough. Some of New York’s Strongest, as the sanitation department has dubbed their workers, leave me scratching my head sometimes. The design will remain on the truck for as long as it remains intact on the vehicle. They will be encouraged to keep waste low by using recycled and discarded paints. Participating artists will be provided with supplies and a working space to enact their designs, and they will have just three, seven-hour work days, sometime in late September and early October, to completely adorn their collection vehicle, including all three visible sides of the truck. "DSNY will privilege proposals that center the over 7,000 sanitation workers who keep New York clean and motifs of cleanliness. Almost 100 artists applied, and Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia at the time called the designs 'truly … works of art.'" Its inaugural edition happened in 2019, when four artists and students in a visual arts class were selected to cover the 400-square-foot blank “canvases” with images of sanitation workers, recycling, and flowers. "DSNY is rebooting this public art project, Trucks of Art, for the second time, and will be accepting expressions of interest from artists until September 18. But artists whose designs are selected will not be paid, raising questions about whether the city’s open call devalues art," said Jasmine Liu for Hyperallergic. "The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking proposals from artists to decorate its 46,000-pound waste collection vehicles.
